First time I've seen the sword used more like a weapon than just something to balance on your head/shoulder/neck/hip. Refreshing.
I'd have to agree with you there. When a sword is treated like a prop, a lot of the intensity is lost. Even if a sword isn't sharp, the dancer should always strive for the illusion that it is a dangerous weapon.
